Museum in center Tokyo

I went to new museum in the center of Tokyo business area. I was excited.

In NY, the surroundings of museums are all place for citizen. People are casually reading, playing and chatting in the stairs of front entrance.

But this museum in Tokyo was so different. The area was really tidy and the office working women around there were nicely wearing like latest fashion magazines. I had never worn like that. I was so shocked that these women wore like that every day,,,,

I went to the publisher to have meeting about exhibition and signed books after that. I wore OK for my business and surroundings. Can I make it when I have a child and go to PTA things? I do not know TPO here.

An old Japanese proverb says "The youngers should have a hard time even they have to pay for it." Long time ago, many youngers had to work apart from hometown and and they must have difficult time financially and mentally.

When in the time, nobody enjoyed a hard time. If they do not have to, they do not want to go through. Real poverty or trouble is nothing funny but really tough. They had fight on it, sometime feel ashamed, hurt in the friendship or relationship. They had to face on bad side of themselves sometimes and experienced unnecessary heartache. We really do not want to experience the same again as we already went through it. But I recently noticed that word exists since we can bear the hard time only when we are young.

I had a little poor experience. The worst time is that when I was in Boston. I lived in the attic-where we were not allowed to use any heat even it was -20℃ outside. I could not sleep some night by cold air from the window. I always covered myself with blanket to do my assigment. The floor was shallow. So pencils and pens were rolling on the floor. I could not stand since the ceilling was low. Once I caught a cold, I never recovered of cold aid inside. I stayed at my friend's finally. Looking back those days, I am now so happy to have a warm house with heating system.

I had to walk half hour to do laundry under -10℃. I was busy for the school and I only could make it once two weeks. I cried on the way sometime. I really did not want to do this again. In Japan, almost everybody has laundry system at home and it is common sense to do laundry everyday. But I feel thank to that since I had that experience.

To have roommates is what I experienced oversea for the first time. Actually it is not easy to live with different cultural background people-they do not care cleaning the house and we had much bags. They brought several boyfriends and girlfriends all the time(we only have one shower and toilet for 5 people) But I do not have any chance to live with others except family if I did not have roommates overseas. It is not easy to live with others, but one of the good things to experience when we are young. Otherwise, we make up own rules and getting difficult to share the time and space and even life.

Japan is wealthy for last few decades and our generation get many things naturally. If we are average person, we get "this and that and them" ordinally. But the time changes. What you could get until now is not available from one point of time. We all can suddenly poor. Or one's life turned into different direction. When we are in not available time, the experience that we had less can be meaningful. My aunt said "Only chance to experience poorness and hard time is when they are young" might be right. It is difficult to willing to do so though,,,

Making of Goromaru

These are the sketches of Goromaru.

I tried some version of Goromaru before starting. White plane dog is difficult on white background, and I wondered. First he had black spot on his nose.

I tried white plane Goromaru with background. Especially I wondered the scenery of rain.

This is final painting. Goromaru looks poor successfully.

On the other day, an editor told me, "I saw your new books stocking in front in a big department store bookshop. It was good book!" I did not see them in front, yet, but it was great to hear it from somebody.

My mom had experienced that she gave a friend's daughter one of my books and neighbor boy came over and said, "I know the book. I like it!" My mom told me happily.

I googled my new book sometime. I could see libralies all over Japan bought it. I have never been there, I only know the name, or I never even heard of it, but my book is there. It is in somebody's hands, in somebody's bag, and somebody is reading ir or somebody is talking on it. It is funny feeling. I rarely have connection to the reader, but once in a while, I saw the small link with the readers, somebody somewhere.

Everyday Sunny finally!
I decided to do laundry of all winter clothing for welcoming summer.

It is a small studio. I do not have enough space for hanging. I washed 4 sweaters or scarves one time. Slowly summer clothing are taking over the winter's.

Then big laundry! I washed futon. My apt has tiny garden with hanging. I heard that In Shanghai, government told citizen not to hung the laundry outside during Expo since it is out of civilized life. I think the laundry outside is a symbol of people's life and very beautiful. Well, it is getting less in Japan because of new style of life. I missed the scenery,,,

In my parent's house, there was big balcony and we could hang as much futon as possible. Diving into the warm soft futon, I nearly asleep for comfot.

I used to see some futon on thr roof. If I were a cat, I would have a great nap there.

My neighbor cats are sleeping on the road. It rarely has car passing since it is inside of housing area, but I still worry about them. They ignore my warning. I want to be friends with them, in vain,,,

I asked my friend to read the story.

She said, "this looks heavy when I only read the letters." Really? I did not expect the reaction.

The story is humorous cute love story about hen. Thinking of her opinion, I read through it again and it could be...

I wrote it thinking of images of finished book-sophisticated illuminated book, like a classic picture book, two or three colour print, in the shape of chapterbook, etc, etc. I already have visual information only in my mind. Then I chose old type writing like fable or some sirious words. As a result, they would be comical.

In master picture books, they also would be heavy without visual images. Vision has big influence on the story and inpression. I again realized how powerful the image is.

Kae's English Diary Kae

This is the illustration essay job for Argument-the magazine for high school English teachers. It is published twice a year. I did a page for each issues. Now more than 15 pages I have done. The time has passed since I started.

It is the latest issue.
"I got 35 years old. In Japan, they call "around 40" and people treated as a middle age women. But in a questionnaire in NY, they said that 35 year-old girl is the most poplar for the men. The women got enough career after graduation and went through much life experience then they becane more attractive as a matured woman. My teacher said to me, "you matured nicely" and that was the best appreciation I felt. That kind of praises push girls to maintain themselves well and they became beautiful forty-something, fifty-something.

hello on the walk

Rent

I watched "Rent" on DVD. I had no chance to see it on musical play in NY. I kept watching it since I liked music, then gradually noticed how well done it was. It starts on Christmas and ends Christmas. So many dramas relating to love happened in the play. So they said "to measure" " a year-five hundred twenty-five thousands six hundred minutes" "in Love"

In the play, there is the scene that homeless said, "this town is full of artist." I was there as a part. I was poor, dirty and always suffer from paying the rent. Rent in NY is super-expensive. First I had roommate and paid 500$ then I need my own apt for my picture book job then paid 1150$. I was just paying rent and no money left. But still I thought it was my castle. But it was not stable. Once I was sick, I lost energy to being ambicious to earn money and finally gave up apt. The landlord asked me 1300$ anyway for next contract. I did not have to be homeless since I had place to go back. But if I did not, how could I survive there? There is just tiny boundary between artist and homeless, I thought at that time.

After leaving NY, I am living in clean polite Japan. But still I have "bad" custom at that time.
1.sit down everywhere
2.dripping food
3.wear worn-out clothings, shoes and soxes
I became middle 30's and I should care. But I rememberd everybody around me did not care small things. We all were so proud of themselves for no particular reasons. I did not see RENT there, but still reminds me the time.
