At the end of the wild land

冷たい北西の風が吹くthe strong north western wind blew the island.
釜で茹で、すぐに干すthis is outside boiling pot for the traditional island's dried sweet potate.
The dried shelf is right next to the pot.

Christ stood at the clean quiet village.
Ebukuro church.
you can see the route of the Christian move. All the islands are closer by ship.

At the end of the West of Japan, there are islands called Goto.
The Missionary arrived to teach people Christianity
400 years ago. At that time, the king around the area became Christian
and allowed the Missionary to teach their people.
But the time had changed. The king fell, and the central Government
prohibited the Christianity. The Missionary left Japan.
Even after that, people kept their belief behind the Government.
It lasted for 200 years.

They were sometimes got persecution because of their different belief.
They sought for new land and move one part from others.
Then some of them ended up to live in Goto islands-very rough area.

The lands are made of sharp steep. There are no flat land suitable for rice field.
They planted sweet potatoes in a small field at steep
and ate them as the staple food.
To keep the potato through the year, they slice them, boiled them and
put them dried in the cold Northern west wind of the winter.

200 years later, Japan had changed again.
The Government opened diplomatic relations and
the Missionary found the hidden Christian still there.
People gather money(even they were poor) they built their own churches.
They cut stones and carried by themselves for building.
In Goto islands, there are descendant still living and keeping their faith
in their ancestor's precious buildings.
It was simple pure faith of no doubt.

I visited Goto islands several time this year.
The population of the island declined and
the culture there is about to extinct.
I was just touched how beautiful of the simple life and belief
of the people and thinking of record them.
It would be selected to the world Herritage soon.
People at the church were afraid their quiet precious place
for pray were bothered by tourist.
I wish that visitor understood the history and culture
and respect their life. They were their own property
-they cleaned daily, they paid for the cost.

The people's simplest life there asked me
"What is life?" "Why people live?"
They have less, still live in difficult wild nature.
They do not wish much, support each other and smile calmly.

We now are forced to go up and up.
We had to be richer, wiser, otherwise we will be loser.
Endless race of the world occur the collapse.

I do not know what I can do.
But it was very good chance to look back myself
and think over how to live, what to express as an artist.
