「かんころもちと教会の島」 The Island of Kankoromochi and Churches in Nagasaki

 I spent 4 years to make this book, The Island of Kankoromochi and Churches in Nagasaki. 「かんころもちと教会の島」の初校が上がってきました。

　初めて、かんころ餅のルーツを追って、島に行った時、「これは、どこにもない話だし、これから過疎化で、いつまで同じ風景が見られるか、わからない。絶対、記録に残し、多くの人に知ってもらいたい！」と思いました。４年前のことです。

　わたしは、絶対おもしろいはず、と思ったのですが、最初に出版業界に持ち込んだ時は「地方にある、１つの食べ物の話なんて、全国規模じゃ、取り上げられない」という反応が主流でした。「今、世の中は、一月にあと１万円節約する方法、みたいな現実で役立つ話を求めてるのよ」とも言われました。世知辛い世の中だなあ、と思いました。

　がっかりしていたある日、デザインした、佐世保市図書館の利用者カードのマスコミ向け発表会があり、当時の毎日新聞の佐世保支局長と話すことになりました。支局長は、かんころ餅の話に乗ってきてくれて、「それ、とりあえず、地方版で連載しましょう」と、すぐに企画書を出してくれました。

　連載は決まったものの、単独で、フリーランスの人間が取材をすることは、なかなか、ハードルの高いものでした。島の人も、何してる人かわからないわたしに、警戒心があったと思います。しかし、新聞記事がたまり始めると、「こんな風に、島のこと、書いているんですよ」と理解してもらいやすくなり、人が人を紹介してくれ、いろんな人に会うことができました。

　教会、学校、島留学先、塩づくり、県庁の害獣課、農家、かんころ餅業者さん、移住者さん、修道院、、、

　２年ほどが経ち、記事がたまった頃、もう１度、絵本の企画を持ち込みました。手元にアイデアだけではなく、形となるものがある。そして、たくさんのふしぎとして刊行されることが、決まりました。決まってみると、「たくさんのふしぎ」しかあり得なかったな、と思うほど、ピッタリの読者層、形式の内容です。

　最初は絶望的に見えたものも、１つずつ、小さな結果を積み重ねていくことで、最終目標に到達できるんだということを、自分自身も知ることができました。ちょうど、娘の成長とともに取材をしてきて、娘がたくさんのふしぎの対象年齢の時に、出版されます。昨日は、初校を、厳しい目でチェックしておりました。

I heard about the roots of Kankoromochi, the traditional food of Nagasaki, 4 years ago. I visited Goto island to see the culture behind it. The island is the place where the descendant of the Hidden Christian still live and kept the faith.

I just believed that their lives should be recorded since it would change within years. The population of rural islands has declined and some churches would close soon. Kankoromochi is the food that they could survive even under the hardship of prohibition of Christianity.

It was really difficult to find the publisher first. I started writing articles in newspaper once a month and kept visiting to meet people in island and collect the materials, looked up the histories and sometimes experienced the life there. After two years writing, I brought those materials and visit publishers again. One editor decided to publish it.

I really thanks to my husband who support the trip which did not make result until now. 

I hope that it would be published overseas, too. This book is about the freedom of the faith, the strong will of the ordinal human being, and the importance of everyday life happiness.

おかあさんの すきなもの Mommy's Favorite!

Chicky ran to collect Hot chocolate, bruncket, soxes, etc. Mommy said, "I love fruffy, warm, yellow,,,

Chicky ran to collect, Yellow butterfly, Yellow hat, Yellow moon etc. Mommy said, "Listen, chicky. Mommy's favorite is Fruffy, warm and yellow,,,

Chicky, you, certainly!" She hugged her tight in her wings.

おはなしワンダーの、おはなしコーナーの絵を担当しました。
お話は、村中弘美さんです。

おはなしワンダーのお仕事は何度かさせていただいているのですが、
印刷される紙が、丈夫な厚紙にコーティングがされたもので、
なかなか、この印刷に合うスタイルを見つけられずにきました。

今回、線を排除したところ、
水彩の色合いが、よく出たように思い、ホッとしました。

親子のかわいいお話なので、おうちで、ほっこり
見てもらえたら、うれしいな。

世界遺産ガイドリーフレット Brochure of World Herritage

 昨年、世界遺産登録された「長崎と天草の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」
Last year, "The hidden Christian culture in Nagasaki region" became
the World Herritage.

訪れる人たち、迎える人たち、それぞれが、
見えているもの、見えていないものの意味を知ることができるといいね、
との声に応えて、リーフレットが出来上がりました。
県北地域ー平戸、黒島、小値賀の３箇所が載っています。
I worked for the brochure about three area, Kuroshima, Hirado and Ojika,
to let visitors and welcomers to know the background of the area.

１１月ごろから、取材に入り、
現地のガイドさんや、信徒さん、神父様、
漁師さん、農家さん、移住者さん、住人を支える様々な人に会って
お話を伺い、
学芸員の方に、歴史を学び、
そして、文章を作り上げ、イラストを加え、作りました。
I visited the area, met people, listen to the stories,
experienced the life there and learn the history from scolors.

相当な情報量で、「うわ」と思われるかもしれませんが、
それだけ、文化とは、大勢の人間によって作り上げられた、
壮大なドラマだと、いうこと。
Enormous information on one paper and people would feel
"OMG, I do not want to read much" but this would help to know
better and make the trip better
since it is difficult to see the culture from a glance.

私も、改めて、歴史を知り、人を知り、生活を知り、
見えている部分が、ほんの一部なのだと感じました。
背景を知れば知るほど、いろんなことを、感じることができる旅が
できるのでは、と思います。

このリーフレットが、だれかの心の旅のきっかけになれたら、
いいなあ、と思うのでした。
I wish this brochure would help visitors have rich spiritual experiece from trip.

「おじいちゃんと いいゆだな」Bath with Grand-pa

We stayed at grandpa home. I was looking forward to taking bath with grandpa.

Granpa washed my hair like soft cream. I washed his back for return.

Grandpa sang very well. I did drumming for the song.

We counted 10. Grandpa taught me how to count in classic way.

We did kanpai after bath with milk.

お湯や、湯気や、タイルや、あわで、楽しい雰囲気を表してます。

１２月頭に提出した挿絵が、すでに、書籍になって、届きました。
年末年始をはさんだと思うと、なんという、タイトなスケジュール！
日本の印刷業界の素早さに、頭が下がります。

ネイティブの使う「知的に見える」英語の指南本でありながら、
現代的な社会問題を取り入れながら、
一匹のメス猫の成長を、描いています。

３部作の１作目では、捨てられる子猫であったミクが、
今や、母猫となり、母として悩み、そして、子離れまでと、
ネコの一生を垣間見て、自分と重ねて、じーんとする場面も。

要所、要所に、挿絵として入れたペン画も一緒に
楽しんでいただけたら、光栄です。

おばけちゃんのなつやすみ Little Ghost's Summer Vacation

今年の初めに、お仕事させていただいた、「おばけちゃんの　なつやすみ」が、出来上がってきました！
夏らしい景色を ふんだんに取り入れて、子供たちが冒険したくなるような、明るい一冊に仕上がっています。
直販本に特徴の「迷路地図」 のページもあったのですが、こんな風に、地図を描く機会って、減りましたよね。

わがやは、カーナビも、スマホもない、「アナログ一家」なのですが、東京に行った際、ホテルのフロントさんに場所を聞いたところ、説明があやふやで、とても、わかりにくかった経験をしました。そこで、気付いたのは、「今時、電話をかけてきて、場所を聞くような人は、いないんだな」ということでした。
そういえば、カーナビをいつも使っていると、道を覚えない、
携帯を使っているから、毎日、電話する相手の番号すら、覚えていない、など、
機械に頼りすぎて、頼りなくなっている、人間の能力を感じることも。

わたしは、地図、描くの（見るのも）好きです。
図版とか、展開図とか、輪切りで説明とか、そして、当たり前だけど、絵本も大好きです。
それは、情報を伝えるために、いろいろ工夫がなされ、
美的にも美しくしようと、デザインされていて、ウットリします。

世界は、どんどん便利になるので、ナノカが大きくなる頃には、アナログの地図や
図版は、消えていってしまうのかもしれませんが、
デジタルは便利で、どんどん発達してるので、
べつに、ある日必要になったら、きっと、使いこなせることでしょう。
ということで、あえて「アナログ」生活です。

今年の夏は、地図を見ながら、冒険したり、
一緒に地図を描いたり、してみようかなあ。

When Marnie was there 思い出のマーニー

今季、ジブリの新作は、イギリスの児童文学をベースにした「思い出のマーニー」である。夏の公開に向けて、少しずつ、その詳細が見えてきた。
さて、原作は日本では、岩波児童文庫で翻訳されているが、今回、英語で原作を読みたい人のために、講談社英語文庫から出版されることになり、その挿絵を担当させてもらった。文庫のため、ひとつひとつは、とても小さな挿絵になるが、原作を読む人が、少しでも雰囲気をつかめたら、と、丁寧に仕上げた。ジブリ作品は、イギリスから北海道に舞台を移すという話だし、きっとギャップがあるだろうが、原作を読むのも、また、「ああ、ここを、こう変えたのかあ、、、」と感心したり、ファンには、たまらないのではないだろうか。文学は、記事や論文に比べ、いくぶん、読みやすいと思う。私も、高校生時代に「赤毛のアン」や、「不思議な国のアリス」を、わりとスムーズに読めた記憶がある。勉強のため以外にも、原文の持つ、リズムや雰囲気を、直接味わってもらえたら、と思う。
私のマックの調子が悪く、ここの所、相方パソコンからの投稿になっているが、使い方がいまいち、わからず、荒い画像になっていて、すみません。
"When Marney was there" will be the next Jiburi's movie coming this summer. I illustarated the English version of the novel published by Kodansha, Japan. It was very small book and each illustrations is very small, but I tried to finish them to help the readers to feel the original story.
Sorry for the rough images. My pc was broken and I updated recent articles from husband's. It does not go well like my pc.

１０月にした挿し絵のお仕事、「日本人に足りないネイティブの英単語１００」が、発売される。英語の学習用のお話だが、子猫が捨てられて、猫の城、と呼ばれるパラダイスを目指して、東京へと向かう（途中、恋愛アリ、別れアリ、人に襲われて、仲間を失ったり、、、）なかなか、ハードボイルドな動物目線のお話しになっている。イラストは３０点を越えて、〆切りもタイトだったため、かなり体がキツかったが、お話の世界を表現する事に集中できて、精神的には助けられた仕事だった。CDもついて、注釈もおもしろく、お買い得かと思います。よかったら、ご覧下さいませ。
I illustrated the novel for English study. The story about a cat who was abandoned got used to the stray cat life and traveled to Tokyo to search for the Cat Palace with other cats. I had to finish right after the operation and it was a little tough but actually it helped me to go through since I could devote into the work, not think too much to became down.
It was a wild story with some adventure, departure, love and so on of cats. It includes a CD for listening study. I think it is reasonable.

Kasa-jizo かさ地蔵

I illustrated the booklet for the magazine, kid's English Journal February issue. The story is Japanese folk tale, Kasa-jizo. It is a lovely story about an old couple at the end of the year. アルクの子ども英語ジャーナル２月号の付録の、「かさ地蔵」の絵本の挿絵をさせてもらいました。

Kasa-jizo

Once upon a time, there lived an old man and his wife. One year-end, the old wife said to her husband, "We don't have any rice cakes." The old man answered, "OK, let's make some bamboo hats and sell them to buy some rice cakes."　おじいさんとおばあさんは、お正月用の餅すらありません。

The old man and his wife worked hard to make the bamboo hats, "One, two, three, four, five. We have made five bamboo hats, "smiled his old wife. The old man left home to sell the hats in town.　竹をあんで、かさを作って、市場で売る事にしました。

"Nice bamboo hats! Nice bamboo hats! Who needs a bamboo hats?" The old man sang out in the crowd, but nobody stopped. "Oh, boy. These aren't selling at all."　しかし、かさは売れませんでした。

The sun began to set, and he still had five bamboo hats left. The old man thought of his wife and said, "I am sorry. I won't be able to get any rice cakes today." He started to walk back home with the five hats.　帰り道、雪が降ってきます。

On the way home, the old man saw six ojizosama with their heads all covered by snow. "Oh, there is no roof above you. You look almost frozen in this snow," the old man said to the ojizosama.　ふと見ると、道ばたに、雪をかぶったお地蔵さんが並んでいます。

"I will give you these hats. One, two, three, four, five..." The old man put a bamboo hat on each ojizosama's head. "No, I need one more hat. Hmm...Oh, I have an idea!" The old man took his towel and placed it gently on the sixth ojizosama's head. Then he returned home with nothing in his hands.　おじいさんは、売れ残ったかさを、お地蔵さんに順番にかぶせてあげました。最後のお地蔵さんにはかさがなかったので、自分の手ぬぐいをかけてあげました。

When the old man arrived home, he told his wife what he had done during the day. "Forgive me. I couldn't sell even one hat. I couldn't buy any dice cakes." "Don't apologize. You did a good thing. The hats will help keep off the snow." His old wife smiled kindly.　手ぶらで帰ったおじいさんが、事情を話すと、おばあさんも、いい事をしたと喜んでくれました。

In the middle of the night, the old man and his wife heard a mysterious sound. The sound got closer and closer. And they heard someone knocking on the door. Knock, knock, knock."Who's that?" said the old man. "Oh, it's so late," said his wife.　その日の真夜中、扉をたたくものがあります。

"Shall we open the door?" asked the wife. "OK," answereed the old man. They opened the door. Lo and behold, there wre lots of rice caked, rice, fish, miso, vegetables, New Year's Day decorations, and many other delicacies. "Wow, this is amazing!" the old man and his wife shouted.　扉を開けると、そこには、お正月のお餅やごちそうがいっぱい！

"Look! Those are ojizosama!" said the old man. They saw six ojizosama walking away in the distance. "These are from the ojizosama." the old man said. "Thank you very much, ojizosama," said the old couple who were deeply grateful.　遠くに夕方のお地蔵さまが歩いてるのが見えました。お地蔵さまからのプレゼントだったのです。

Thanks to the ojizosama, the old man and his wife were able to enjoy a lovely New Year's Day. And they both lived happily ever after.　お地蔵さまのおかげで、よいお正月が迎えられました。そして、おじいさんとおばあさんは、それからも幸せに暮らしました。
