友人に、書いた原稿を読んでもらった。

友人曰く、「これ、文字だけで読むと、重いね、、、」とのこと。え？そう？私はあんまり予想してなかった反応に、びっくりした。

文章を書いてる時には、私の頭の中には、すでに「ちょっと大人向け」「２、３色の特色印刷で、初期の頃の絵本の雰囲気で」「シックなフォント」「チャプターブックのように」と、かなり「こんな雰囲気にしたい」という像が具体像で浮かんでいた。そうしたビジュアルがあるのを予想しながら、古くさい言葉を使っていた。その方がコミカルになるのだ。
I wrote it thinking of images of finished book-sophisticated illuminated book, like a classic picture book, two or three colour print, in the shape of chapterbook, etc, etc. I already have visual information only in my mind. Then I chose old type writing like fable or some sirious words. As a result, they would be comical.

そういえば、名作「１００万回生きた猫」だって、あれを最初から文字だけのものとして読んだら、なかなかの重さがある。あの、本当にふてぶてしそうな、貫禄のあるノラ猫を見ながら読むから、バランスが取れるのだ。改めて、ビジュアルの存在の大きさを感じた。自分の仕事は、だからこそあるのにね。それを、久々に意識した出来事だった。
In master picture books, they also would be heavy without visual images. Vision has big influence on the story and inpression. I again realized how powerful the image is.
