Culutral Boundary on characters 登場人物の文化の壁

When I am writing for American readers(or all Non-Japanese readers), I sometime find difficulty about making characters. Some of my characters are based on my "brought-up" culture. Fables, traditional monsters, religion and customs.
I sometimes cannot see what is cultural and what is universal.
アメリカ向けにお話を書いていて、文化的側面に引っかかる事は多い。
言い伝え、古い話、妖怪や　宗教的な存在にいたるまで、
知らず知らずに骨の髄まで染まっているからだ。
どこまで通じて、どこから全く通じないのかは
書いてみて、読ませて、初めてわかる、かけみたいなものだ。

They are Thunders.
In Japan thunders are believed in this kind of figure. They are living on the clouds and making rain and thunder. They make sound by drums.
雷さまも、日本ではこのような姿で、雲の上で太鼓を叩いているものだが、
まったく、こちらには通じない文化だ。


I have story idea that the thunder effectively appears at the end!
But how can I make Americans understand this goblin looking guy living on the cloud plays the drums. And, who knows, the thunder's favorite food is humans belly buttons. Too much, maybe.
There is God of Thunder in Greek Myth, but still very different in shape and story.
雷さまが出てくる話が書きたかったが、この鬼にも似た（いかにも悪そうな）
モンスターが雲の上に突然いても、訳がわからないだろう。
ギリシア神話には、雷は神様として形を持っているが、それにしても、
こんな姿ではないし、している事も違う。
かなり、ハードルの高いキャラクターだろう。

About Goblin, Japanese have close relationship with goblins.
We have lots of festivals related to Goblin. This is Setsubun. Poplar winter festival to throw roasted soy beans to drive goblins away.

鬼と言えば、日本は節分にもあるように、鬼と日常で密接に関わっているが、

Goblins are not evil. In our culture they are existing for being bad and avoided.
To purify the society, we need Goblins. It is really complicated and difficult to be understood for outsiders.
Recently I wrote the story in which God appears. I was told that it would be difficult to mention God in America since it is related to religion. This kind of cultural boundary is sometimes high and sometimes almost zero. We do not know until we write and show people.
私たちが、当たり前だと思っている「鬼」の姿は、西洋や他の文化の
似たような姿をした妖怪や悪魔とは役割が違う。
日本の社会では、鬼は「絶対悪」として存在するのではなく、どちらかと言えば、
日常のひずみのようなものを、「けがれ」として浄化するために存在している。
つまり、人の恨みや弱さや悲しみなどを、一手に引き受けて悪役をしてくれる
「度量の深い」存在だとも言えるのだ。そう考えると、簡単に説明がつかないのもわかる。
私が話に「神様」を登場させて、「これは宗教的にアメリカじゃ無理よ」と言われたのも、
そんな事を考えると、わかる気がする。
