I have terrible habit to observe people around me. I think I am simply interested in people.
私は、周りを観察しまくる、悪い癖があるみたいです。

I found the women in Nashville were good listener than New Yorkers. When they were with men, the men talk more, and the women listen and nod. In New York, usually girls talk.
なんとなく周りの話を盗み聞きしちゃってることも多いです。ちなみに、南部の女性は美人が多いと人気が高いそうなのですが、私が観察してたところ、彼女たちは基本的にとても聞き上手の傾向があります。ニューヨークではまず、われ先におもしろおかしく話す積極的な女性が多いのですが、ここでは男性と連れ立ってる女性は、聞き役に回って、熱心にうなづいているのをよく見かけました。

I found that some tendency of the middle age typical working men shirts. They have more tacks in the shoulder and result in more clothing around the belt.
服装も、とても気になります。ナッシュビルのいわゆるホワイトカラーの中年男性は、このようなシャツ、ネクタイ、ズボン、という格好で歩いているのですが、このシャツが日本に比べややタックが多いように感じます。動きやすさの追求なのでしょうか、それとも、大柄な人が多いからなのか、、、



I look carefully the possession of people. This girl was a little bit "bitchy" type of outfit, talked very aggressive with friend, behaved strange like talking and sighing by herself, but I could see she is serious student of law school of Vanderbilt University.
持ち物も、勝手にチェックしちゃいます。この日、隣に座った女の子は、ちょっと派手で、話し方もとてもきつくて、独り言を言ったり、ため息ついたり、変わり者な感じ。が、丸文字でびっしり書かれたレポート用紙と法律関係の分厚い本から、ロースクール（アメリカでは大学卒業してから通うので大学院にあたる）のまじめな学生であることが伺えて、彼女の全体像が見えてくるわけです。

This is the doctor working at children's hospital(lab coat-doctor. Mark of children's hospital in the left breast) in the lunchtime at the cafe a little far from hospital. Maybe he wants to have break from hospital.
これは、ランチタイムに見かけた小児科のお医者さん。大学病院内にカフェテリアがあるし、外に食べに行くのは結構めんどうくさい（遠い）のですが、多分、ちょっと一人になりたかったんでしょうね。

This was the middle aged guy I met the bus stop. I asked him the time, and he recommended the cleaning shop neighbor. He excitedly showed his white leather coat. He got spot, but cleaning shop did perfect job. White leather coat was so important for him! Funny!
このおじさんは、バス乗り場で時間を聞いたら、近所のクリーニング屋を薦めてきました。彼の大事な白い革ジャン（！）に大きな汚れをつけてしまったのに、きれいにしてくれたのだそうです。概して、ナッシュビルの人はシャイで、（私のような外国人がめずらしいのもあるのだろうけど）向こうから話しかけてくることは少ないのですが、一度こちらから声をかけると、無駄な（おもしろい）情報まで話してくれることは結構あります。

My friend said, "it is very dangerous to meet you." I am sorry, people, but I cannot stop.
友人曰く、「かえに出会うの、危険だねえ。観察されるから」とのことですが、どうも、やめられません。

Harvest Festival 収穫祭

On the weekend, I went to the "Music Festival" in country side. It took 2 hours from Nashville by car(my friend drove like crazily fast). When we got there it was almost over unfortunately.
週末にネットで調べた、田舎の収穫祭に車で行きました。ハイウェイをぶっ飛ばしても、2時間以上かかりました。残念ながら、着いたら、もう終わりかけでした。

Parking a lot was made up after soy bean field.(I could see some left over soy beans) High school girls were working there to guide the cars.
臨時に作られた駐車場は、大豆畑だったようで、枝豆風なものがまだ、刈り残されてました。駐車場の引導は地元の高校生の女の子たちがしていて、とっても素朴でかわいかったです。


In the tents, they were selling native products. Self-binned foods like pickles, salsa sauce, fruit preserve and so on. They showed how to make wool strings and knitting from them, blacksmith, woodcut, lace and traditional paintings.
テントには、地元の物産が売られてました。私は手作りのピクルスとジャムを買いました。その他にも、レース編みや鍛冶屋、毛糸の紡ぎなどの実演をしていて、そのまま売っていました。古き良き南部、と呼ばれるように、南の方にはこうした古い工芸品を作る人達は残ってるみたいです。


Near the agriculture museum, they have early American house. It is log-cabin and inside was very dark. But I love the dairy staff they are using. Especially I love quilt done by only white cotton. I could see how people at that time made things rich using hands and energy but simple staff. Beauty of hard work.
地元の展示館の横には、アーリーアメリカンの家が建てられてました。ログキャビンのシンプルな小屋で、小さな窓以外に光を取り入れるものはなく、中は真っ暗で、開拓者時代の生活のシンプルさを思わせます。ただ、そこで使われていたという日用品はその暗さの中に、温かみを与えるような、愛情のこもった手作業にあふれていました。白い布だけを使ったキルトは、限られた物を使って、少しでも生活を豊かにしようとしていた当時の女性の心意気が感じられました。




This was my first time to see cotton field. It was surprising view to see cotton pieces were left on the side of the road. In the festival, I saw the curt walking through the cotton field. I had wanted to ride!
初めて、コットン畑を見ました。もこもこ白いものが実っていて、不思議な風景です。収穫祭会場では、横のコットン畑を馬車で走るコーナーがあって、とても乗りたかったですが、時間切れでした。残念。

Go to Downtown ダウンタウンに行こう

I decided to go to "Downtown" Nashville. I looked up the map and I found the riverside park at the end of the town.
ナッシュビルのダウンタウンに行くことにしました。地図を見ると、街のはしっこには川が流れてるようです。

For some reasons, I love riverside. It is good place to walk around, to sit down on the bench and read the books.
なぜか私は川が好きです。ぶらぶら歩いたり、ベンチで本を読んだりするのが好きなのです。川の横に「リバーサイドパーク」という名前を見つけて、行くことにしました。

But I walked to the shore and found a little bit rough atmosphere there. There was park and bench as I imagined, but there were some bored people, too. They started to talk to me, and it was really annoying. Nashville is safe town, as I feel, but usually less people in the town(where are people hanging out?) and it is difficult to find the place where I can just have relaxed surrounded by the others. I gave up riverside.
でも、行ってみると、ひまそうなラフな人々がたむろってました。ちょっと座ってどうのこうの、、、という雰囲気ではありません。早々に退散。ナッシュビルは比較的安全な街だと思うのですが、どうも人が集まってる場所が偏っていて（というより、ほとんど人が外にいない）、ふつうに人が座って本を読んでいて不自然じゃない場所がないのが、ちょっと残念です。

And I went to Hatch Show Print. It was the print shop that Joann, art director, highly recommended to me when I told her about my visit Nashville. Hatch Show Print was established in 1879 and still making posters by old fashion letter press. They are using their old collection of letters and also add some woodblocks by own designers and craftsmen.
続いて、ハッチショープリントに行きました。ここは、アートディレクターのジョアンが薦めてくれたので、ぜひ訪れようと思ってました。なんと１８７９年に設立された印刷所で、今もその古いスタイルの活字印刷をしています。お店の後ろには山のような活字のブロックのコレクションが棚に並んでいます。このすばらしいコレクションで足りない時は、職人さんに新しいブロックを作り足してもらい、印刷をします。

I would love to write about this shop! I love old letterings and ink colours. I talked with the lady working there and she said, "we can make poster when your next book comes out" Does not it great to have book poster by this old printing! Maybe I should write about this cat living in print shop.
こういう古い印刷所が舞台のお話が書けたら、素敵ですね。ここには、我が物顔に動き回ってるハッチキャットと呼ばれる猫がいます。このネコの話、書きたいなあ。ちなみに、お店の人と話したら、「次の本が出る時には、うちでポスター作りましょうよ」と言ってくれました。この活字印刷で新刊のポスター作ってもらえたら、特別な気持ちになるだろうなあ。

This is what they are doing. If you touch the surface, you can feel the pressure of the press and each ink layers. It gives me very special feeling-you never have same feeling from colour copies.
活字印刷とは、こんな感じです。この辺の看板のレタリングは、非常に凝っていて、見がいがあります。ちょっといかつくて、男っぽい感じです。

Donuts stories ドーナツ物語

I read the article about donuts in the New York Times. Now people ravel donuts is one of the unhealthy sweets because of trans fat. The article shows recipe because donuts is still such a sweet nostalgic food which is so familiar to all Americans.
先日、ニューヨークタイムズ日曜版に「アメリカ人のドーナツ離れ」が話題になっていた。トランスファットが槍玉にあがってから、すっかり人気を落としてしまったようです。が、ドーナッツのその親しみやすさと食べやすさ、懐かしさは、やっぱり捨て切れない、とも。

I heard about the 35 years old donuts store in Nashville. The writer said that it was his first work when he was in high school. It sounds like very American high school stories and I was interested. Look at this cute 50's style sign! I felt I had to visit.
ナッシュビルに開店３５年のドーナッツ屋があります。そこで高校生の時に最初のアルバイトをした男性の文章を読んで、アメリカの健全な田舎を感じて（そこで育った訳でもないのに）なんか懐かしいような気持ちになりました。それに、この５０年代風の看板！ぜひ、これは訪れなくては、、、と行ってみることにしました。

I took the Nashville MTA bus to Greenhill. I found the store next to high school. Most of donuts are $1.04-1.49. The menu is not so different from major first food donuts shops like Dunking Donuts. I had blueberry donuts and coffee. Actually it was good.
「ドーナッツデン」は高校の隣にあります。値段もラインナップも、大型のフランチャイズのドーナッツ屋とあまり変わりません。でも、お店の雰囲気は地元密着の個人店のにおいがぷんぷんして、とてもいい。今も高校生らしきバイトの女の子が一人入っていて、愛想よく、てきぱき働いていました。

But I liked the atmosphere a lot. Customers look like the boys from Mad magazine or Norman Rockwell's paintings!
そして、お客さんの子供達がかわいい！マッドマガジンとか、ノーマンロックウェルの絵から抜け出て来たみたいで、思わずスケッチせずにはいられませんでした。

I was so amazed that I was drawing them. They gathered to me to praise me.(I do not know why teacher brought students to Donuts shop to have snack there though) Very cute!
そうしてたら、子供達がわらわらと寄って来ました。「これ、僕かな」「これ、三つ編みしてるから、わたしよね？」と。だいたい、先生が引率してドーナッツ食べに来てるのがすでに不思議なのだけど、５ドル札を握って、ドーナッツを注文している子供は駄菓子屋に２００円ぐらいを握って来ている子供を思わせて、かわいかったです。

Fashion in Tennessee テネシーファッション

Before my coming over to Tennessee, my friend mentioned that people in Tennessee wore like 80's.
テネシーに来る前に、ここの人のファッションについて、「８０年代のままだ」と友達に聞いていた。

"The guys are mullet"
男性はマレット（デビットボーイが昔していた、後ろ髪だけのばしている髪型のことだそうです）で、

"And the girls have big hairs."
女性は、おそろしく大きな頭をしている」と言う話だったのだけど、

In fact, I found out that it was not true. They were quite wearing standard clothing. A little disappointment. What I noticed is that 70 % wear hooded sweater shirts until last week.
実際は、とっても平均的な目立たない服装をしてる人が多いです。ちょっと、がっかり。私が気付いたのは、やたらパーカーを着てる人が多いなあ、ということだったのですが、

Today it got colder. Then I found 70 % wore leather black(brown) jacket.
今日、突然冷え込んだら、一気に黒の革ジャンにとって代わりました。
（ちなみに、手前の女の子は、とても古典的なワンピースを着ていて、目立ちました）

She wore leather jacket, too. I guess that there are limitation of choice.
選択肢が少ないのか、保守的なのか、、ちょっと観察のしがいがありません。逆に、ちょっと８０年代のにおいがする服装を見ると、わくわくしています。

Barber, University, 床屋さん、大学

I do love to go around "daily place" of the towns. Cafe, Bar, Market, Laundry, Kindergarten and Barber could be fun if you carefully watch people.
私は、日常生活のにおいのする場所へ出入りするのが好きです。バーとか、カフェ、市場、ランドリーに幼稚園、床屋さんなどなど。

I went to Barber in Nashville. Barber is such a manly place and girls will never know if they do not go. The topics are quite general. Starting with weather, they talk about job, politics and sports. Can be about family and education system or holidays and cars. I think I will have no abilities to deal with customers.
ナッシュビルの床屋さんに行ってみました。床屋さんとは、本当に男臭い場所で、普通にしてたら、女性にはあまり縁のない場所です。会話を聞いていると、天気の話に始まり、政治や仕事の事、家族や教育問題、バケーションや車、と話題は多岐に渡っていて、それを感じよくさばく様子を見ていたら、私には絶対無理だと思いました。

This Barber's owner did great job about talk. I was amazed! She was from San Diego and she does not like Nashville but she loves her shop.
ここのオーナーさんは、サンディエゴ出身の女性で、本当にちゃきちゃきと、お客さんを気分よくさばいていました。ナッシュビルは好きじゃないけど、自分の店は好きなんだそうです。どうして、ここに居着いちゃったのかな。

Verderville University is famous for the science study. These women were taking lunch at neighboring bakery. Tall woman wore lab coat, so I can see she is science. Both are a little matured. I have some reasonless respect to science majored women. And they are professor and old. I am so impressed.
ヴァンダービル大学は科学方面に強い大学なのだそうです。この女性達は、IDをつけたまま、ランチを食べていました。片方の女性が白衣を着てたので、多分、科学系の教授達だろう、と目をつけました。私、理系の女性には理由もなく、無条件の尊敬を抱いてしまうのですが、その上、この人たち、年配でこの分野で長い事ブイブイ言わしてるんだなあ、と勝手に喜んでしまいました。

Tiny old professor wore red dress and big manly watch. Cool!
こっちの年配の小柄な教授、真っ赤な服に、男っぽいごつい時計がかっこいい！

This is a freshman. Look like very shy. Good luck, boy!
こっちは、親元を離れたばかりの大学一年生と見た。シャイそうだ。がんばれ！

Observation! Country Music Bar バーの観察

Nashville is the Music city. It is the center of country music and you can listen to live music anywhere in the bar at night.On Saturday night, I went to this bar in neighbor. There were lots of young people hanging out. I had never imagined that younger people hang out with country music. I think I had wrong impression about country music. Live music was not bad actually.
ナッシュビルはミュージックシティと呼ばれる、カントリーミュージックの聖地です。
夜になれば、どこのバーでも生演奏が聞けます。そして、かなりレベルが高い。
実は、私はカントリーミュージック＝アメリカの演歌、というイメージがあって、
どうも苦手意識が強かったのですが、生の演奏を聴くと、全然印象が変わりました。
ちょっと野性味のあるメロウな声の若い女の子が歌ってるのなんて、かなりかっこいい！
ちまたに流れているコマーシャルベースの音楽ではないものに、ちゃんといいものが、
あるんだそうです。

First thing I was amazed is men wore "shirts." I felt this is a kind of formal meeting place. The next thing which caught my eyes was Girl's breast. They were quite big. Yes, the girls here in Nashville have generally bigger breast than NY ones, but they were bigger than day time. I think they were some kind of tricks.
これは近所のバー。土曜日の夜に、ちょっと寄ってみました。かなりおじさまミュージシャンがオールドナンバーを歌ってたのですが、客層は若者達でした。うーん、この若さでカントリーミュージックでノリノリで踊ってるのって、ちょっとしたカルチャーショック。目を引いたのは、男性陣がきちんとしたシャツを着ている事。土曜日のバーはフォーマルな社交の場なんでしょう。

Anyway it is effective in the darkness of bar. I could see men's eyes were following their breasts. Oh, well. I heard that men's brain are reacting to the massive than surface. It makes sense. It was fun to observe it, but a little bit uncomfortable since I did not belong to this kind of community. So we left. I think these girls are very cute, and pleased to be nice if my male friend introduce me as their girlfriend, but I myself am not interested to be friends with them. Yeah, I am picky...
もうひとつ目を引いたのは、女の子達の胸の大きさです。確かに、ナッシュビルの平均的な胸の大きさは、ニューヨークよりも大きく、いわゆる健康美、少しオーバーウェイトかなあ、という感じなのですが、夜のバーで見た女の子達は、それよりもどう見ても大きかった。上げ底なのかなあ。なににせよ、バーの暗闇で見ると、これが効果的なのです。男性の目が釘づけ。ううむ。見物してるのは楽しかったのですが、どうもこの文化になじめず、早々退散。次は、少しぐらい、詰め物を入れていった方が、居心地がいいかもしれません。

Starbucks everywhere. Of course, here in Nashville, Tennessee, too.

I went there for cafe and observing people around here.

This Starbucks is located near Vanderbilt University.

Healthy cute college girl was reading the papers at the same time to get tan.

ブロンドの健康的な美人（この街は多いです）な学生さんが宿題を読みながら

日焼けをしてました。

This guy was writing something thoughtfully.

I imagined he was a country musician writing lyrics.

I checked later and found him filling the blanks of crosswords.

Watch his muscles! They were different from NY's gym made muscles.

この人は考え深げに何かを書いてたので、勝手に「カントリーミュージシャンが

詩を書いている」と思ってみてたんだけど、あとで確かめたら、クロスワードパズルでした。

彼の筋肉は、「使われてできた筋肉」で、ニューヨークのジムで作られてるものとは

違うなあ、と思いました。

I kind of like the atmosphere of university. Nostalgic memory comes to me.

But I saw one guy hold huge heavy hardcover book with lots of post-it.

Oh, well,,,I am the person who read fast, skipping the pages with half of imaginations.

I will never be academic person.

大学の雰囲気というのは、いいものだ。なんか、懐かしくなる。

が、ある学生さんが持っていたものすごく重たそうな、難しそうな辞書みたいな本に

いっぱいメモが挟んであるのを見て、思い出した。そうそう、私は、きちんと本を

読み込む事ができない人間だったのだ。ページをスキップしながら、想像力で補い

適当に読んでしまう。アカデミックには向いてなかった事、つくづく思い出しました。

いや、博士とか、アカデミックな人々、えらいよなあ。

From Tennessee テネシーより

Sorry about my silence for a long time. I had a little busy days in NY.

As usual. Yes, NY is busy city.

ご無沙汰していて、すみません。ニューヨークでは２週間ジタバタしてました。

懐かしい人々に、急ぎ足の街。すっかり、飲み込まれてました。

Then I moved to Tennessee last week.

Live country music welcomed me at airport.

先週、テネシーに移動しました。空港ではカントリーミュージックのお出迎え。

Compared with NY, I can say girls in Tennessee is a little bit out of fashion.

But that "Unfashionable" is cute actually. I guess ordinary boys prefer that kind of style

than super-fashionable unique style in some way. Should I try it?

まず目についたのは、ここの女の子達はちょっとダサイということです。

が、そのダササが、なんだかかわいい。これって、たいがいの男の子が感じる事の

ような気がする。めちゃくちゃきまってる、最新のエッジーなファッションより

親しみやすくて、いい。私も、この方針でこれから、いこうかしら。

But, wait a minute!

This is typical fashion here for middle aged woman.

Oh, well, out of fashion is not so effective in this case.

しかし、ちょっと待って。

ここの中年女性の平均的な服装はこんな感じで、親しみやすいおばちゃん、

と言った雰囲気。そうよね、行き着く先は、こことなると考えちゃう。

The young girls in NY is very experimental about their fashion.

From girl's point of view, they are great. Second hand dress with toy bag.

With a little taste of hippies. Funny unique idea to try. Essence from French film.

Those are not always appealing major of boys or conservative adults, but good lessons,,

ニューヨークの若い女の子達は、チャレンジ精神いっぱいに着こなす。

女の子同士で見ていると、なかなか素敵に思えるものばかりだ。古着におもちゃの鞄、

ちょっとヒッピーのテイストを入れたり、おもしろいアイデアを取り入れたり、

フランス映画を気どったり。残念ながら、そうしたおしゃれは、メジャーな人気を

得るとは言えない。シンプルなTシャツとジーンズや、スリップドレスで十分なのだ。

That lesson got fruitful later. I met so many Fashionable

editors and art directors on my business meetings.

They are always in good shape.

しかし、時間を経て、その経験は実を結ぶ。

ニューヨークで出会ったどのエディターもデザイナーもかっちり

着こなしていた。スタイルもキープしている。

Even in casual outfit, they are still intelligent and still with

a little bit humor about their fashion.

To think over that, I wanted to be "fashionable" in my middle age and elder age.

少々カジュアルな服装の日でも、インテリジェントでおしゃれでいながら

自分らしいユーモアを持ち合わせた雰囲気は崩さない。

年を取って中年女性やおばあちゃんになった時に、こうなれたら、確かにかっこいいな

と思う。ううむ。
