相方さんが４０歳になった。「人生の半分は過ぎちゃった、、、」と、４０と言う数字に過敏に反応しているが、長寿一族の西村家の観点からすると、「１００歳まで生きるのなら、半分も行ってない」である。無頓着な私は、「４０」と大きく書いた誕生日カードと、４０（フォーティーン）という本をプレゼントした。若干複雑そうな顔をしていたが、それでも、お誕生日って、祝ってなんぼ。やっぱり、いくつになっても、めでたいことであり続けたいなあ、と思う。
