Display

The Christmas is coming! The decoration of the town got their light and the town is colored.
I am leaving for my hometown for two weeks on Friday. The last job before that is displaying for the boutique. I got offer to draw the picture on the wall of the stairways to the shop. First we tried to draw direct on the wall (That was exciting for me) but we gave up since it is a little dangerous to draw on the higher where they do not have safe access. Instead, I will draw on the paper and paste them onto the wall.
Some animals brought the decorations towards the second floor to lead the people. There is a tree on the second floor. I will draw with brown oil bar in a color like sketch and just put color on the decorations.
The drawings will be like this.
I could not find the rolled big paper in this small town, so I had to paste 4 papers to make bigger. I have no space bigger than this in my apt. Well, still big paper made me feel excited.
I have only a half day to finish, but I will do my best.

The day before the lecture, and after,,,講演会前日/後日

On Sunday, I needed to write the speech for Monday lecture. I asked husband to take care of Nano.
They went to the library and bought sweets. The outing was fun for Nanoka,,,,
but after coming back home, she brought all her toys to my room and queued on the floor. She did not say "play with me" or bother me, so I let her doing that,
Then she brought the music toy. She played the game song that ended making funny face.
I made funny face for her. She laughed and said again to push the button. She repeated three times and tried again. I said, "Nano, please play with daddy."
Her face expression get dark. She almost cried. I said, "Sorry, you tired to be patient for whole day" then she burst crying in my arms.
I usually did not work when she was at home, but sometimes I have to work during weekend. I asked husband to watch her. She understands well about my job and tried to respect it. Well she was still around me.
Thanks to her corporation, I could write the speech, but omg, I forgot to bring the text to the lecture on Monday. I was so foolish.
Anyway, I could make the lecture OK without the text. It was the gathering of book reading groups around the area and they were all book lovers.

Book Love Kid

When Nanoka was born, I thought that what I could do for her was giving her book friendly life. So I made my mind to read as many books as possible for her.
then I bought her first book when she was 1 and a half month old and started to read for her even though she did not react at all.
She has grown up to be a book lover.
She is now in terrible two. She always said no to my offer. "Shall we brush your teeth?" "No" but she know she end up doing that, so she added, "after reading a book" I did so.
After that, she always said, "after a book" every time I asked to her to take the bath, change the clothes, and clean the toys. It took much time and energy to do anything. I felt regret about this habit.
I was starting feel tired of her attitude and felt irritated to read the book. But I just remembered the first decision of mine. Yes, I wished that she became a book lover and she became as I wished. What is my complain?
On the other night, she brought me a middle grade thick book to read. I told her that was too long and difficult for her, but she cried for that. I started to read.
I was not sure if she listened to it or not, but she just rolled on the sheets and looked happy. If I stopped reading, she got mad to ask me keep reading.
Nanoka wanted me to keep on eyes on her till her falling asleep. To bring a thick book is for same purpose.
To read the picture book is not only for entertainment but also for feeling mom's or Dad's love. Kids make sure their love by seeing they spend time for them, feeling their warm hands and knees, and listening their soft voices. DVD or CD can provide the knowledge or stories but they cannot represent their love.
Reading books for the kids was hard job for working busy moms sometimes, but it is actually very easy way to let kids feel parents love, so I want to keep doing until she said "No".

Little break

Nanoka's most favorite toys-house play and staffed animals.
Each kids has each favorite play. Some boys play with cars, trains and others are devoted in the hero. Nanoka is house-play lover. She is always very kind mother of her staffed animals and gave good care of them. She even try to take care of my, saying, "be careful not to make mess to eat" and wipe my mouth. She would be the interfering busybody in the future,,,
I still did not buy toys for Nanoka. She was using used plastic bottles which was supposed to be the trash. I felt sorry and I bought 4 outlet potteries at the pottery fair at Mikawachi(famous pottery town). She was thrilled to use them but broke one by dropping a pot on it. I felt it dangerous for her to use the fragile toys and told her to keep them when she finished playing.
Probably it is easier if I bought toys made as toys. But the sound that real ceramics made by touching with buttons, nuts etc. Also I want Nanoka to learn how to use the materials-she needs to give special care to specific materials, not always OK to use the things roughly.
Anyway, she was happy to say, "I have so much toys" since she does not know the toy-made toys and never compare with others, she believed that buttons, nuts, shells and ceramics are toys. Happy girl!
I am going to have rest at my parent's home for two week from Nov 15th with Nanoka.

Lecture for Reading Group in Nothern Nagasaki

On November 11th, I am going to have a lecture to the book reading group in Northern Nagasaki. I am terrible speaker in the public but tried to do my best. I am going to speak about "Picture book and Children"-so my childhood, the kids I met as an author, and my daughter's way of reading etc. I have to work on it a little bit more this week.
I am going to enjoy the meeting since they are book lover in the first place.

I wrote in the newspaper of the local baby-mom supporting group.
When I was in Brooklyn, I saw so many local events. I felt the local activity lively-I guessed that it was because people consider their identity more often and the meaning of the existence because the society was more individualistic.
After I came back to Japan, I thought that I would like to keep acting like that as an artist-to support the local art, local education, and local events,,,however, the way of local artist was not so familiar in Japan. Especially in Tokyo, probably since it was too big, or the artist were not so close to the people, I could not find the chances.
After having kids, I felt more eager to be closer to the local people. Then we moved to Sasebo. After moving, I found the network to support the moms and kids were so lively that we got used to the new place very soon. Then gradually I started to be one of the supporter rather than just being users.
I wonder why this city activity was so lively here in Sasebo. I soon found the people who had been working so hard on developing the system and network. Ms.Tokkatsu is one of them. She was one of mothers like us, and made enormous effort to concrete these all social systems. I was supposed to work with her to develop "reading books" activity here, but we could not have done it together at last. She had passed away just a few days ago. I send here the deepest condolences for her family loss and I hope that I could support the local reading group as she had done and wished.

Halloween 2013

At the bus stop, she changed.
In the shopping center, with the Littlge Redhooted.
With two dressed girls. She would say "Princess!" in a few years.
We have Halloween parade at the central shopping center in our city. Kids wore the costume and small shops such as jeans shop, stationary shop, Futon shop etc gave kids candies. It is a heartwarming event and this is the second time for Nanoka to join.
Last year, she was still small, but difficult and I could not let her wear strange costume since she would not wear. So I chose dots dress and named it "Yayoi Kusama" -actually local old people did not know her. Anyway she got candies.
This year I was busy and had no time to prepare. I could not make my mind. But in my mind, Frida Kahlo was No.1 choice. Still I just thought that Frida was not familiar to the people here and nobody would notice. Anyway the day came, and I just could not find the other choice, then I started to make the costume in the morning beside Nanoka. I cut the colorful flower for her shirts and made red skirt from the clothes I had at home. Of course her eye blows were connected. Then I put flower onto her hair. I spent 88 yen (less than dollar) only for hair flower.
She looked like traditional Korean girl and people just thought she was cute. I guess only one person recognise she was Frida. Anyway, it was fun day for her and I am happy.
